With the completion of the pipeline, Aegina will be supplied with water by the EYDAP network with 21,500 cubic meters per day, which will flow from the reservoir in Perani of Salamina to the reservoir of the Hive of Aegina.

The submarine pipeline that will connect Aegina with Salamina is being built, enabling the island to be supplied with water by EYDAP. The project is done exclusively with funding from the Region, and it is one of the most technically interesting projects that have been built in recent years in Greece.

This project has been auctioned since 2015 and the relevant contract was signed in December 2017, but the work had stopped for some time. However, it was launched again, after relevant discussions between the Minister of Finance Mr. Christos Staikouras, the Deputy Minister of Finance and responsible for fiscal policy and public property Mr. Apostolos Vesyropoulos and the Attica Regional Governor Mr. George Patoulis, in the presence of the Vice-Regional. The water supply of Aegina from the EYDAP network "a breath-taking project for Aegina and Attica" as characterized by the governor of Attica Mr. G. Patoulis, is expected to be completed in April 2020.

In a statement made to "Th", the Deputy Regional Governor of the Islands, Mr. Vasso Theodorakopoulou - Bogri, described the project as of great importance for the living standard of the inhabitants and pointed out:

"The completion of the water supply project of Aegina through its connection to the EYDAP network in Salamina, will mean a new era for the Saronic Gulf, as a major problem will be finally solved, significantly improving the quality of life of the island's inhabitants. In the Regional Unit of Islands we are doing everything in our power to speed up the work, and we are very optimistic that we will soon celebrate the start of the water supply ".

The timeline of the project

The Attica Region had undertaken with a program contract on May 18, 2015 the financing of the project in the amount of 30,135,000.00 euros (including 23% VAT), while the construction contract of the project was signed on December 21, 2017 with a total cost of 20,826,535.59 euros (including 24% VAT).

After the restart of the project, the contractor was installed at the construction site of Aegina, the construction site was configured and fenced, while a 468 m long roller track and two bases for the installation of welding machines were constructed with their appropriate protection.

From January 28, 2018 to February 16, 2018, a geophysical survey was carried out at the bottom of the sea area between Aegina and Salamina, and its results were approved under no. prot. 58152 / 18-4-2018 decision of the Managing Authority.

On October 18, 2018, the production of HDPE 100 pipe, with a nominal diameter of mainly DN 630mm and a nominal pressure of 12.5atm SDR 13.6, ended at the factory of "Pipe Life Hellas A.E." in Thebes, and from there the pipes were transported to the construction site of Aegina.

With the no. prot. 77045 / 25-5-2018 decision was approved by the Executive Service the process of autogenous welding, which was done by certified welders with certified semi-automatic welding machines. 33 pipelines of the 468 m long pipeline were welded each and then hermetic elements were placed in the pipelines.

With the no. 2131.15-5 / 02/19 / 24-4-2019 decision of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus, the temporary stay-anchoring in a sea area of the pipelines was approved and then they were transferred to the Resti area of Salamina where they remain at sea until the sinking process.

Remaining work

After the end of trawling (March 31, 2020), the pipelines will be transported from the Resti area of Salamina to the well under construction at the port in Perani, Salamina, and the first pipeline will be connected to the EYDAP steel pipe with a diameter of DN500 .

The rest of the pipelines will follow to the well in Leonti, Aegina, and finally the connection will be made with the existing polyethylene pipe of diameter Φ630mm to the reservoir of the Aegina Cell.

The estimated time of the submarine pipeline will be from April 26, 2020 to May 15, 2020..

After the immersion will follow the protection of the pipeline with cement layers, work which will last five months and with this the physical object of the project will be completed.

After the completion of the project, the contractor will have the obligation to operate and maintain the project for three years.
